I run Marie Gems, a DTF transfer shop in Wichita, Kansas, and I'm a mom of seven. A matching set for a big family comes down to sizing more than design, so here is how I would work it out.
What do I need for a matching family shirt set?
You need three things: a blank shirt for every person, a heat press with even temperature and pressure, and one ready-to-press DTF transfer per shirt. The transfer arrives already printed on film, so there is no printer, no gang sheet and no minimum order. Step 1: Which design works at every size?
Choose a design with a bold, simple shape, because a matching family set uses the same artwork at more than one transfer size, one for the kids and one for the adults. The size you order is the longest side of the design, and the artwork keeps its own proportions, so a wide design and a tall design at the same size will not have the same height. Step 2: What size does each person get?
Use what I call the two-size rule: one transfer size for the kids and one for the adults, so the whole family looks matched without ordering five sizes. My size guide supports it. Step 3: What does a family set actually cost?
A family of six costs $20.00 in transfers when two adults use the 12" size at $4.00 each and four kids use the 8" size at $3.00 each. That is $8.00 for the adults and $12.00 for the kids.
The quantity tiers can work against you on small counts. Four 8" singles cost $12.00, but the 5-transfer tier at 8" costs $13.50, so buying five to cover four kids costs $1.50 more and leaves you a spare. The tier starts to pay off at six kids: one 5-transfer tier at $13.50 plus one single at $3.00 is $16.50, against $18.00 for six singles. With two adults at $8.00 that family of eight comes to $24.50 in transfers.
Step 4: Can I add a name or photo to a personalized kids shirt?
Yes, with the custom upload. Step 5: How do I press the whole set?
Press every shirt the same way: 320°F for 15 seconds, let the film cool completely, then cold peel. Set the shirts out in size order so the 12" transfers and the 8" transfers do not get mixed up mid-stack. I finally got a heat press cover because I kept having to reprint things that scorched, and I would tell anyone pressing a stack of shirts to do it sooner than I did. What if I would rather not press anything myself?
