Getting the heat and time right is the difference between a transfer that lasts through fifty washes and one that peels after five. Settings vary slightly by equipment, so here's a working baseline plus how to adjust it.

Heat Press Settings

For most cotton and cotton-blend garments:

  • Temperature: 300–320°F (149–160°C)
  • Time: 10–15 seconds for the first press
  • Pressure: Medium-firm — you should feel real resistance when closing the press, not just the platen resting on the garment
  • Second press: Same temperature, 5–10 seconds, no cover sheet needed if your film peels cold

Household Iron Settings

Irons run less consistent heat than a press, so compensate with time and technique rather than pressure alone:

  • Setting: Cotton or highest heat setting, steam off, steam holes empty of water
  • Time: 25–35 seconds, moving in small overlapping circles rather than holding still — a stationary iron creates hot spots and cool spots
  • Pressure: Full body weight leaned into the iron, not just wrist pressure

Adjusting for Fabric Type

100% cotton Use the baseline settings above as-is.
Cotton/poly blends Drop 5–10°F to avoid scorching the polyester content; press time stays the same.
100% polyester or performance fabric Lower to 280–290°F and use a lighter touch — these fabrics scorch and shine at high heat.
Dark or heat-sensitive fabric Test on a scrap or hidden seam first, and always use a protective sheet over the design.

Signs Your Settings Are Off

  • Design lifts at the corners right away: not enough time or pressure — add 5 seconds and press firmer next time.
  • Fabric looks shiny or slightly melted around the design: too hot — drop 10–20°F.
  • Colors look dull instead of vibrant once cooled: usually under-pressing — the second press in the previous section helps here.

These settings are a starting point, not a rulebook — every press and iron runs slightly differently, so it's worth testing on a scrap piece of the same fabric before your first real garment.
