DTF heat transfers make a great gift two ways. You can give them to someone who already has a heat press, or you can use them to make a finished shirt yourself. Before you order, these six questions cover what you need to know: what a DTF transfer is, whether you need a gang sheet, uploading your own design, sizes, pressing and minimums. The answers come straight from my FAQ, with a little more from me on each one.
I run Marie Gems, a DTF transfer shop in Wichita, Kansas. What is a DTF transfer?
DTF stands for direct-to-film. A DTF transfer is a printed design created on specialized film and applied to compatible fabric using heat and pressure. Ready-to-press DTF transfers allow you to create finished apparel without owning a DTF printer.
From me: in plain words, the printing part is already done. The design shows up on film, you put it on your shirt, press it and peel. As a gift, that means your crafty friend gets to skip straight to the fun part.
Do I need to create a gang sheet?
No. You do not need to create or upload a gang sheet to order DTF transfers from Marie Gems. Shop an existing design or upload your own artwork and order individual transfers.
From me: this is on purpose. If you need one shirt, you should be able to buy one transfer. Can I upload my own design?
Yes. Customers can upload their own artwork for custom DTF printing. For best results, submit high-resolution artwork and make sure you have permission or rights to reproduce the submitted content.
From me: this is where gifts get really personal. A family photo turned into a design, your kid's drawing, an inside joke only your sister gets. Send the biggest, clearest version of the file you have, and only send artwork you have the right to use. You can upload your custom design here.
What sizes are available?
Marie Gems offers multiple individual DTF transfer sizes, including 4", 6", 8", 10" and 12" options. Availability may vary by product.
From me: here's the quick version of my size guide. 4" is for smaller graphics and chest placements. 6" is for medium designs and youth apparel. 8" works for larger youth designs and a lot of adult projects. 10" is the popular pick for adult shirt fronts. 12" is the full-size option for larger adult shirts. If you're gifting transfers to a crafter and don't know what they'll press them on, 10" is a safe middle for adult shirts.
How do I press a Marie Gems DTF transfer?
The recommended starting application is 320°F for 15 seconds with a cold peel. Follow the instructions provided with your transfer because equipment and materials can affect application.
From me: the part people rush is the cold peel, so let it cool all the way before pulling the film. And a little gift-adjacent tip from my own experience: I finally caved and got a heat press cover because I was over reprinting stuff that scorched. If your crafter doesn't have one, it pairs nicely with a pack of transfers. Is there a minimum order for DTF transfers?
No. Marie Gems has no minimum order. You can order a single transfer.
From me: one transfer for one shirt for one person is a real order to me, which makes it easy to build a single thoughtful gift.
