Website Redesign Case Study
Bakery Website Redesign Case Study: Before and After
A real look at how Ellegant Creations Bakery™ went from a product-focused bakery website to a strategic, SEO-focused Shopify website built around customer journey, corporate gifting, Virginia shipping, and future growth.
Bakery Website Before and After
Sometimes a website outgrows the business it was built for. When I originally built the Ellegant Creations Bakery™ website in August 2025, I was working with the information, resources, and experience I had at the time. The website wasn't built with a professional copywriter. There wasn't a formal brand strategy, a detailed customer journey map, or a signature product strategy. Most importantly, neither Elizabeth nor I fully knew where the business would be less than a year later. The website reflected what we knew during that season of the business, and honestly, it did exactly what it was supposed to do.
You can view the updated bakery website here: Ellegant Creations Bakery™ .
The original website focused heavily on showcasing products. Visitors could browse gourmet baked goods, artisan chocolates, cakes, cookies, truffles, and seasonal treats. The products looked great, and the website served as an online storefront for the bakery. Looking back, however, there was something missing. The website told visitors what Ellegant Creations Bakery™ sold, but it didn't clearly explain why the bakery was different, who Elizabeth was, what made the desserts special, what customers should order first, how the ordering process worked, or why businesses should consider corporate gifting. At the time, I didn't have those answers, and I couldn't write what I didn't know.
August 2025 Website
The original website showcased the bakery's products but lacked a clear customer journey, SEO strategy, and signature product focus.
2026 Website Redesign
The redesigned site focuses on SEO, customer journey, Cuddle Cakes™, corporate gifting, Virginia shipping, and stronger conversion paths.
Small Business Website Redesign: What Changed in Less Than a Year?
A lot can happen in less than a year. Over the past year, I've invested countless hours learning and improving my skills in search engine optimization, customer journey mapping, conversion-focused copywriting, Shopify strategy, brand positioning, user experience, custom coding, website design, and AI-assisted research and strategy. My approach to websites today is completely different from what it was in August 2025. Back then, I was focused primarily on design and functionality. Today, I focus on strategy first because a beautiful website that doesn't guide visitors toward a goal is simply a digital brochure. A strategic website helps a business grow.
One thing that has dramatically changed my process is how I use AI. I don't use AI to replace creativity, strategy, or the business owner's expertise. Instead, I use it to help uncover opportunities, organize information, identify SEO gaps, and build stronger customer journeys. The business owner still provides the knowledge. I bring the strategy, SEO experience, coding knowledge, and design expertise. AI simply helps connect the dots faster. When combined with real-world experience and thoughtful decision-making, it becomes a powerful tool for creating better websites.
Website Redesign for Better Conversions and Customer Journey
One of the biggest reasons this project means so much to me is because Elizabeth trusted me enough to come back and redesign the website using everything I've learned. She could have hired someone else. She could have left the website exactly as it was. Instead, she gave me the opportunity to revisit the project with fresh eyes and a completely different skill set. For that, I'm incredibly grateful. This redesign wasn't just about improving a website. It was about helping a growing business prepare for its next chapter while giving me the opportunity to apply everything I had learned over the past year.
The biggest change wasn't the colors, fonts, or layouts. The biggest change was the customer journey. The original homepage was essentially a hero section followed by products, more products, testimonials, and an order form. While it showcased what the bakery offered, it didn't guide visitors toward a decision. The new homepage was intentionally built to answer customer questions before they ever needed to ask them. Visitors are now introduced to the brand, the signature products, how ordering works, the bakery collections, corporate gifting options, Elizabeth's story, frequently asked questions, testimonials, and contact options. Every section has a purpose. Every section helps move visitors one step closer to placing an order.
Shopify Bakery Website Redesign: Creating a Signature Product Strategy
One of the most important strategic changes was introducing a stronger focus on Cuddle Cakes™. Instead of overwhelming visitors with dozens of products immediately, the website now highlights a signature offering that customers can remember. Strong brands are often associated with one thing first, and for Ellegant Creations Bakery™, Cuddle Cakes™ became that focal point. This gives the bakery stronger branding, better product recognition, easier marketing opportunities, and a more memorable customer experience.
This is something I see often when working on a website redesign for a small business. Business owners want to showcase everything they offer, but customers usually need a starting point. Creating a signature product helps simplify decision-making and makes the brand easier to remember.
SEO-Focused Website Redesign and Virginia Bakery Growth
Another major factor behind the redesign was Virginia's updated cottage food regulations. Beginning July 1, eligible cottage food businesses can accept online orders, process online payments, and ship eligible products throughout Virginia. This creates entirely new opportunities for businesses like Ellegant Creations Bakery™. Instead of serving only local customers, the bakery can now reach dessert lovers throughout the Commonwealth.
That meant the website needed to evolve. We began strategically incorporating Virginia bakery keywords, Virginia dessert gifting, Virginia shipping, corporate gifting, employee appreciation gifts, and client thank-you gifts. These updates weren't just about SEO. They were about aligning the website with the future direction of the business and ensuring the site could support future growth.
Bakery Website Redesign Case Study: Expanding into Corporate Gifting
One of my favorite additions to the new website is the Corporate Gifting page. The original website focused almost entirely on individual consumers. The new website introduces an entirely new audience: businesses. The Corporate Gifting page positions Ellegant Creations Bakery™ as a partner for employee appreciation gifts, client thank-you boxes, holiday gifting, team celebrations, business events, and corporate milestones.
This creates opportunities for larger orders while helping businesses build stronger relationships through thoughtful gifting. It also gives the bakery an additional revenue stream that wasn't clearly presented on the original website.
Small Business Website Transformation Through Strategy
Looking at the before and after versions side by side, it's easy to focus on the visual changes. But the redesign represents something much bigger. It represents growth—not just for the business, but for me as well.
The original website reflected where my skills were in August 2025. The redesigned website reflects everything I've learned in less than a year. And honestly, I'm proud of that. Not because the original website was bad, but because growth is the goal. Every project teaches something. Every client teaches something. Every website teaches something. The goal isn't perfection. The goal is continuous improvement.
One of the most rewarding parts of this project is knowing that Elizabeth trusted me enough to help guide this next phase of her business. As designers, developers, and strategists, we spend so much time learning behind the scenes. We take courses, study SEO, practice coding, learn copywriting, test ideas, and refine our processes. Most of that work happens quietly. Projects like this are a chance to put those lessons into action.
Before and After Website Redesign Results
Today, Ellegant Creations Bakery™ has a website that better reflects the quality of the products, the story behind the brand, the future of the business, new Virginia shipping opportunities, corporate gifting services, and a stronger customer experience overall. Most importantly, it gives customers a clear path from discovering the bakery to placing an order.
That's exactly what a website should do.
See the Finished Website
One of the most rewarding parts of this project was seeing everything come together. From the homepage and corporate gifting page to the updated customer journey and Virginia-focused SEO strategy, the redesign transformed the website into a stronger reflection of the business today.

Looking back at the original website, I don't see mistakes. I see a snapshot of where both the business and I were at that moment in time. Looking at the redesigned website, I see what's possible when knowledge, strategy, experience, and opportunity come together. Less than a year ago, I built the best website I could with what I knew. Today, I built a better one.
And honestly, that's the kind of progress I'm most proud of.
