New Year, New You? Sustainable Self-Care Strategies for Busy Moms in Business
Juanita GruberAs the new year begins, many of us feel the pull to set ambitious goals, embrace change, and strive for a “new you.” But for busy moms running businesses, the pressure to do it all—be a perfect parent, successful entrepreneur, and wellness role model—can quickly lead to burnout. That's why it's crucial to adopt effective self-care strategies for busy moms.
Instead of chasing perfection, let’s focus on something far more achievable and impactful: sustainable self-care. By weaving self-care into your everyday life, you can recharge, refocus, and show up fully for your family, your business, and, most importantly, yourself.
As a mom of six, I’ve learned firsthand that self-care doesn’t have to be complicated to be meaningful. My own routine is about reclaiming time for myself, even in small ways, and making those moments count. Let me share what works for me, along with other strategies to inspire your journey.
1. Start Your Day with YOU in Mind
For me, self-care begins first thing in the morning. It’s my time to focus on myself before the day gets chaotic. I make my coffee, savor the quiet, and take a few minutes to mentally prepare for the day.
After breakfast, I prioritize getting in some steps as part of my health journey. (You can read more about my prediabetes journey and how it’s motivated me to make movement a daily habit!) Walking isn’t just good for my body—it’s also a chance to clear my mind.
Taking my mornings back has also meant stepping away from social media during this time. Instead, I listen to Audible stories while I exercise, turning it into a little escape. And yes, even basic tasks like brushing my teeth and getting dressed are part of my self-care—because sometimes, as moms, we put even those small things on the back burner.
2. Schedule Self-Care Like a Business Meeting
As moms and entrepreneurs, our calendars are packed with client calls, deadlines, and family obligations. But how often do we schedule time for ourselves?
Treat self-care as a non-negotiable appointment. Even if it’s just 15–30 minutes a day, block it off and use that time for something that recharges you. Whether it’s reading, stretching, or enjoying a favorite podcast, these small moments can make a big difference in your energy and mindset. This is my favorite self-care strategies for busy moms myself with being mom of 6.
3. Embrace the Power of Micro-Habits
Big changes often feel overwhelming, but small habits are easier to stick with. Start with micro-habits that fit into your routine:
- Drink a glass of water first thing in the morning.
- Take a short walk after meals (this has been a game-changer for me).
- Write down three things you’re grateful for at the end of the day.
These little actions may seem small, but they add up to a big impact over time.
4. Simplify and Delegate
As moms, we often feel like we have to do everything. But you don’t have to—and you shouldn’t! Learn to delegate tasks, both at work and at home:
- Use shared family calendars to streamline schedules.
- Hire help for repetitive business tasks or household chores.
- Let go of perfectionism—sometimes, “good enough” really is good enough.
By simplifying and delegating, you can free up time and mental energy for the things that truly matter.
5. Prioritize Sleep (Even When It’s Hard)
Good sleep is the foundation of self-care, but let’s be real—it’s not always easy for busy moms. Create a sleep-friendly routine by:
- Setting a consistent bedtime.
- Limiting screen time before bed.
- Making your bedroom a calm, inviting space.
Even if you can’t get a full eight hours every night, making sleep a priority can transform your energy levels and focus. I get it being a mom, waking up with your babies its hard, but self-care strategies for busy moms and working on your sleep is just as important.
6. Take Your Mornings Back
Reclaiming my mornings has been one of the most empowering parts of my self-care journey. By stepping away from social media and starting the day with intention, I’ve created a routine that sets a positive tone for the rest of the day.
If mornings are chaotic in your household, try waking up just 15 minutes earlier to create a little breathing room. Use that time to focus on you—whether it’s sipping coffee in peace, journaling, or doing a quick workout.
7. Build a Support Network
You don’t have to do this alone. Surround yourself with people who lift you up, whether it’s a supportive partner, a business mentor, or fellow mompreneurs. Online communities and local groups can be a great source of encouragement and inspiration.
8. Celebrate the Basics
Self-care isn’t always about grand gestures—it’s about making time for the little things that keep you grounded. For me, that means focusing on basic daily routines, like brushing my teeth and taking walks after meals. These simple acts remind me that taking care of myself is just as important as taking care of my family and my business.
Sustainable Self-Care for the Long Run
As moms, we often put everyone else’s needs before our own. But by focusing on sustainable self-care—small, consistent actions that fit into our lives—we can show up better for everyone, including ourselves.
This year, forget the pressure of a “new you.” Focus on supporting the real you with self-care strategies that feel achievable and empowering.
And remember, even the smallest moments of self-care matter—whether it’s a walk, a story on Audible, or simply brushing your teeth. You deserve it.
